"Button Day Sport" by Sylvia Liszka Durell

Category 1:  Mixed Media
​Winner: "Fish" by Sylvia Liszka Durell

"Fishing" by Syliva Liszka Durell. Plastic buttons provide spots of color in a fish composed of metal buttons. Thrift store rattan was spray-painted silver and used to construct the fish on material from a lady’s shirt.

"World of Sports" by Helene Plank This button and bead composition includes football, soccer, baseball and basketball. Notice that as the figures overlap, color theory comes into play.

"Golf" by Sylvia Liszka Durell. Featured buttons are the golf club bag and the two golfers in the rectangles.

"Motoring" by Suzanne Monroe. This is a quilted and stitched background, photo transfer of my relatives (I have original photo) taken in 1911, Matt Bonnevie was so proud of his car. All the family come out for a ride. His mom is sitting the in back seat furthest on the left. Although the buttons are not the star of this piece - they add texture and represent part of my great-great aunts and great grandmother who were seamstresses - all are in the photo.

"Swimming" by Suzanne Munroe The twins Edith and Eleanor are ready for their favorite sport - swimming! The inspiration came from a 1930s photo of my aunts.Quilted background, the suits and swim caps are raw edge appliquéd and quilted, face and body painted directly on the fabric with Inktense® pencils.And, of course, plain white ordinary buttons to finish the piece!

Hand knit, original hat design. Yarn-sport weight wool and nylon. 8 buttons.

​Winter god “Ullr”(white metal button) protectively looks on as the “skier” (painted wood button) takes their turn down the slopes. “Skis” (white metal button) wait at the base of the mountain for another run. Five plastic "snowflake" buttons seen around the top of the hat indicate snow is in the air!

​"Highmark Stadium: Home of the Buffalo Bills" by Ginny Stanton

"Fishing" by Suzanne Monroe Madeline’s favorite sport - fishing. She and her husband would spend the day on Conway Lake when vacationing up North. Her sister Phylis was ready when they got back to the farm to fix up a yummy fish dinner!

"Highmark Stadium Home of the Buffalo Bills" 9-1/2” X 11” by Ginny Stanton Fabric, thread, embroidery floss, beads and buttons.The seed beads and diminutive pearl buttons in the foreground are meant to represent fans in the stands. The three buttons at the top: “football pennant” & ”star player” are snap together. “Touchdown!” is plastic. The football player catching a pass is a painted wood button.

"Checkers" by Suzanne Munroe. Grandpa and Pup playing the best mind sport - Checkers! They spent most evenings up at the farm engrossed in long periods of silence- a memory I have that taught me to sit quiet, take your time in making decisions.. well I can certainly sit for hours researching my buttons!!!

"Gardening" by Suzanne Monroe Yes, indeed, Gardening is a sport! I prefer to do my gardening right here in my sewing room.This is a 12x12” block made with vintage fabric, couched stems, felt leaves, tiny vintage fabric buttons and my own handmade Yorkshire buttons! A few button bees have found their way into my garden!

"Hide and Seek" by Suzanne Munroe. Anne was never really good at this highly competitive sport of Hide and Seek! Yes, a time when we played outside for hours!

Polymer clay button by Frances Taylor This button was an experiment to see whether I could glue a snap (aka popper) onto the back. I found the LiquidFusion® Heavy Duty performance adhesive worked really well. Not the prettiest button, but it was an experiment to test the idea.
