Hello Fellow Buttoners, In September, WBA will celebrate its first birthday. It was actually two years ago that the idea to begin this organization came together as the founders, armed with a shared vision, decided to create something new for the button world. It's been an exciting year, and now it's time for the first big change to WBA. There are many moving parts to creating an organization like this, and an important one is the role each position will play in its workings. When the founders created job descriptions for the director position, they decided this would be a two-year term. Come September, the directors will have completed one year. If they serve another year, it means, with two exceptions, the entire Board will need to be replaced next year. That would mean seven new people would be needed, and finding that many volunteers all at once would be a daunting task. Instead of letting that happen, we will be running a limited election this year. Three current directors will give up their positions so others can join and learn the workings of the organization to ensure it continues to run smoothly. A Director's duties: Serve a two-year term. Attend all Board and member meetings. At a minimum, lead a team or serve on two teams. This is a fast-paced organization. We've many balls in the air and many more we want to add. We're still learning and refining our processes. As such, this is a position that will require your attention more than once or twice a week, but rarely for large amounts of time. There is no set weekly time commitment, but the work is steady. Expect to be involved. Dare to be innovative. Susan Smith is heading the Nominations Committee. If you would like to be on the committee to search for possible candidates or to put your name forward as a potential candidate, email her via the contact page on the website. Type "Susie Smith" in the "Subject Line." Voting will be done electronically from November 3-21. The Annual Membership Meeting will be on November 24. More information regarding the election will be found in our newsletter in the coming months. Stay tuned. Me at the Michigan show. Happy 85th to the Michigan Button Society! In closing, I love our online WBA community, but it can't replace the personal interaction with other collectors found at conventions; the chatter about when and how a button was made and if a specific artist is really considered a studio button maker. The Florida show heralds the new button season with its convention in January, but spring is when button season really begins. I was fortunate this year to be in Michigan as they celebrated their 85th anniversary, and I hope to attend at least one other local show this year. These shows are not just about buying buttons, but about making one-on-one connections that can continue to be nurtured here online. Please support your regional/state shows. Personal connections are what keep us strong. Don't forget to visit the WBA Member Market -shop 'til you drop at any hour of the day.
